Dr. Wilhelm Mistiaen is professor at the University of Antwerp and Artesis-Plantijn University College of Antwerp, Belgium. He graduated as MD at the University of Antwerp in 1984 and completed a training in General Surgery in 1994. In 2005, he obtained an advanced Master in the field of management of medical data at the University of Ghent. He obtained a first PhD (1999) in Medical Sciences and a second one in Biomedical sciences (2009), both at the University of Antwerp. The latter was focused on the biology of degenerative aortic valve disease and on aortic valve replacement. The current research involves 1) the complication after surgical aortic valve complications and its predictors and 2) how to deal with cardiac patients with a history of malignancy or with an active malignancy. He is regular reviewer for European Journal of Cancer Prevention, and ad hoc reviewer for several other journals such as Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Journal of Heart Valve Disease and Annals of Oncology. He is also Editor of the journal Medicine and of the newly launched journal of Neurocardiovascular Disease. He is also author of over 50 research and review articles. At the moment, his activities are solely dedicated to education and research.
